What is Maturity?

Mature Of, relating to, or characteristic of full development, either mental or physical: mature for her age.

Funny, I always associated maturity with an attitude. We so commonly criticize people as being immature that it was an honest mistake. Geez, we Americans have horrible, horrible grammar. But that is a completely different subject. Maybe another post ;-)...

Anyway, my compliant today is about maturity. It amazes me how much adults can act like they are children! If someone wants something but it appears they won't get it, they begin to whine to try and get what THEY want. I have to wonder how old these people are. Plus shouldn't they have outgrown that characteristic a LONG time ago? Come on now, once we reach 21-years-old, we should be adults in body and in mind. Now we are adults and should, at the very least, begin to become independent. But noooo... We can't accept responsibility. We just want to have fun! Think about it, children who can now legally drink! God help us all...

It made me think, what maturity means. How can we call an adult mature? When he/she stops whining to get their way? When they quit pouting when they don't get their way? For me, maturity is an attitude, a state of mind if you will. Maturity is knowing when we SHOULD say something, or sometimes more importantly, when we should NOT say anything. Maturity is having the wisdom to just shut up, not state our own opinions (no matter how much we may want to ;-P) and just listen to someone complain. Maturity is being that shoulder to cry on. Maturity is when we stop thinking about ourselves, and think about other's needs instead.

Hmm... That means there are a lot of immature people out there! Myself included. Till that one day where we can all declare ourselves mature...
