The Widow's Offering

Mark 12:41-44 NLT Jesus sat down near the collection box in the Temple and watched as the crowds dropped in their money. Many rich people put in large amounts.   Then a poor widow came and dropped in two small coins. Jesus called his disciples to him and said,  “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has given more than all the others who are making contributions.   For they gave a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she had to live on.” "For they gave a tiny  part of their surplus ..." How often do we give a tiny part of our surplus to others? Whenever I come across beggars I would like to give them a dollar to be a little generous. But see what I just said there? I said "a little  generous." It is like I am patting myself on the back for giving one dollar out the many dollars I have available.  How often do we do that with God? We may go to church, but that is only for a brief amount of time on a Sunday. The more devo...

Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus

Image
Luke 16:19-26 NLT Jesus said, "There was a certain rich man who was splendidly clothed in purple and fine linen and who lived each day in luxury. At his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus who was covered with sores. As Lazarus lay there longing for scraps from the rich man's table, the dogs would come and lick his open sores. "Finally, the poor man died and was carried by the angels to be with Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried, and his soul went to the place of the dead. There, in torment, he saw Abraham in the far distance with Lazarus at his side. "The rich man shouted, 'Father Abraham, have some pity! Send Lazarus over here to dip the tip of his finger in the water and cool my tongue. I am in anguish in these flames.' "But Abraham said to him, 'Son, remember that during your lifetime you had everything you wanted, and Lazarus had nothing. So now he is here being comforted, and you are in anguish. And besides, there is a great chasm sep...

The Cost of One's Soul

"And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul?" -Matthew 16:26 & Mark 8:36 NLT What is a soul? It is interesting what Jesus is implying at in the above verse. If one was to gain the whole world I am sure most people would agree that it would be an impressive feat, but Jesus is saying our own soul is more valuable. From  Biblestudytools.com , a soul is "a moral being designed for everlasting life ...and is not dissolved by death." Therefore a soul is not a part of our physical bodies, but a separate entity that happens to reside within our physical bodies. Yet will continue to exist after our physical bodies pass away. And just like how our physical bodies will pass away, this physical world will one day cease to exist. It says in  1 John 2:17  "this world is fading away," continuing on "along with everything that people crave." Now what it is that people crave? 1 John 2:16 states that "the world offers only ...

My Father's House

SCRIPTURE "But why did you need to search?" [Jesus] asked. "Didn't you know that I must be in my Father's house?" -Luke 2:49 NLT OBSERVATION Where can we find Jesus? In his Father's house, or more specifically, he can always be found where God's presence dwells the strongest. Before the temple, that place was the Tabernacle or the Tent of Meeting. Metaphorically speaking, Jesus would be found inside the Holy of Holies.  Today we can find Jesus through the Holy Spirit. That means that He is not restrained to a specific place and can be found anywhere. However, that does not mean that His presence is the same everywhere. There are specific places where He is very easy to find. Churches are one such place. The scripture says that where two or three are gathered in His Name that there He will be also. So a place where several believers are gathered together to worship Him is a great place to encounter Him! APPLICATION "But why did you need to search...

Know Who You Are

That evening after sunset, many sick and demon-possessed people were brought to Jesus. The whole town gathered at the door to watch. So Jesus healed many people who were sick with various diseases, and he cast out many demons. But because the demons knew who he was, he did not allow them to speak. -Mark 1:32-34 NLT Why did Jesus not allow the demons to speak? I believe Luke 4:33-37 provides some insight.   Once when [Jesus] was in the synagogue, a man possessed by a demon - an evil spirit - began shouting at Jesus, "Go away! Why are you interfering with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are - the Holy One sent from God! " Jesus cut him short. " Be quiet !  Come out of the man ," he ordered. At that, the demon threw the man to the floor as the crowd watched; then it came out of him without hurting him further. Amazed, the people exclaimed, "What authority and power this man's words possess! Even evil spirits obey him, and the...

Obedience vs Disobedience

SCRIPTURE We are human, but we don't wage war as humans do. We use God's mighty weapons, no worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ. And after you have become fully obedient, we will punish everyone who remains disobedient. -2 Corinthians 10:3-6 NLT OBSERVATION This passage demonstrates the otherworldliness of having faith. Paul acknowledges our frailty of living in fleshly bodies, yet declares how we do not fight back against our opposition through human means. "We use God's mighty weapons, no worldly weapons." He goes on to explain how the battles will not be physical bouts, but waged more in a mental arena. See how we use God's weapons to "knock down the strongholds of human reasoning... destroy false arguments... capture rebellious thoughts." Paul seems to ...

Upcoming Battle?

I have been having disturbing dreams lately 😣 I wish I could share what they were, but unfortunately do not remember them 😕 Fortunately I still remember what I dreamt last night, and it was not that disturbing 😌 The dream came across like an anime. At first things were normal, and I was hanging out with my friends. I seemed to be either in high school or college and going through the typical things students deal with. Then suddenly I either fell asleep, or willingly transported myself and my best friend into another place. It was in a spiritual realm and we were in a vast area that had multiple shelves full of books. There was another, more mature, person with us, and he was tasked to be like a guard. The three of us were soon joined by my girlfriend, and together we psyched ourselves up for an upcoming battle ⚔ In a separate area, there was another group preparing themselves too. It mirrored my own group as there was a main person, a more mature guard, two other males, and a female...
